Teaching our sons and daughters not to have sex until they are older and married is not effective at reducing teen pregnancies. In fact, according to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey, about one in every five girls aged 15-19 years is either pregnant or already a mother. Why would we keep doing something that does not keep our children safe? Comprehensive sexuality education, which includes accurate information about contraceptives, is the most effective way to reduce teenage pregnancies and protect the futures of our children.
Without comprehensive sexuality education, young people in Kenya are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. Our sons and daughters will be better able to make responsible and rational decisions if we provide them with accurate information about condom and contraception use, and about other aspects of their sexual health and relationships. So, let’s break the silence and provide comprehensive sexuality education in schools. Let’s help our sons and daughters make informed decisions about their health and relationships, and promote a healthier and more open society for all.
